27 - The Peak of Alderahk

Previous session: 26 - Adventurers, Bats, Caverns and Dreamkats

Dreaming with Dreamkats
...

The next morning...

When we're waking up, we are surrounded by Dreamkats, who snuggled during our sleep to be near us.
As we slowly emerge from our slumber, Fen is standing there, waiting for us, wrapped in winter cloth, geared and ready to go.

Fen
GOOD MORNING!
Nesvalyn
WOAH!.. Morning?
Persy
Good morning, are you already ready?
Reylynn
Five more minutes...
Fen
Of course, we're getting the vessel today, it will be great!
Persy
Optimism is great, but it's a dangerous mountain, so be ready for everything.
Fen
You can trust me, I already know what is up there.
Azzy
Can you handle yourself?
Fen
Uh, what is fighting?
Azzy
Probably a no then.
Nesvalyn
Definitively a no.
Persy
It's when you try to be the danger to the danger.
Fen
I don't have a word for that in my language.
Persy
I assume the closest I have to describe that is "destroy", or something similar?
Fen
Oh it's...

He lets out of musical sounds, like a yodal spoken language. Once he's done, he blinks at the party.

Persy
Well, it's about destroying things that are dangerous.
Nesvalyn
Or it's just about survival.
Fen
Oh. I'll wait for you upstairs.

He jumps and flies to the top, back to his room.

Persy
Rey, wake up. You're a rabbit, not a cat.

She grunts and turns back.

As we finish to wake up and start to stand up, the Dreamkats stretch and get on the side, returning to their (happy) business.

Persy
Goodbye my preciouses, stay safe here.
Nesvalyn
...I didn't know you could be that sentimental.

As he rubs his eye like he would've shed a tear, Persy goes to the remains of the Giant Stone, and tries to harvest it, again,

Nesvalyn
Can you please don't touch a pillar of the Wunderran world, please?
Persy
This ship has sailed Nes, it's dead.
Nesvalyn
I noticed and know that, thanks.
Azzy
I was thinking, about the kid and the mother... no nevermind.
Persy
What are you suggesting?
Azzy
His mom is dead and withthe dreamkat thing, we could solve both issues by killing the mom.
Persy
You don't get the root of the problem, don't say that to Fen.
Nesvalyn
I don't really know how much you are on point with emotions Azzy, but usually killing bring loss to the close ones of the victim, which is not a good thing. That's why we're killing only when it's required.
Azzy
If it fixes the problem, it's not really an issue then?
Persy
The problem is not the coma itself, the problem is that she's unconscious, and we don't really know what would happen if she would either wake up or die.
Azzy
Thank you for clarifying.
Nesvalyn
Also with that pure raw energy, we don't know what could happen with that if we kill her...

Upon this discussion, we're taking the elevator to reach Fen upstairs.

Fen
We're getting the ship back, it's going to be better! Ok guys, are you ready to go?
Persy
Ready as ever be.
Fen
Cool!

He does a flip then phases through the ceiling.

Persy
Uh, Fen, we can't do that.
Fen
Oh really?
Nesvalyn
We're still "primitive" if you recall earlier.
Persy
We came from the hole, remember?
Fen
Ok, do you see that hole? Go in there and bring the thing that's wrapped in the black cloth.

Persy goes fetching it, and he starts to unwrap it before bringing it back.
[INT Check] It's a silver circle with two silver thin holes in between the circles. There's a wider opening, similar to a pitch whistle.
Persy turns his head sideway in wonder, then brings it to Fen who let go a "Thank you".
He blows it, we hear the tone, until it turns into frequencies that none of us can process as we still can "hear" it, leaving a weird feeling. After a while, in the middle of room, some sunlight appears. The stone swirls in the ceiling and it finally opens to the top, leaving a 30ft high opening.

Fen
Would that work?

When observing, it would be easy to climb with the rock part. The hard part is to reach that rock part, being 20ft into the air.

Persy
It can do, give us a moment.

Persy pulls out the Pirate Hookshot and uses it to reach the exit, then throws the hookshot to the party. All the group is now to the top after a few minutes.
The view is still beautiful, except it's cold and fierce, and with even more rare air.
As we make our way through the snow, being much harder than before, Fen notices our struggle, and he comes over.

Fen
Oh, I thought about this.

He pulls out this little clear disc make of wobbly materials, and grabs one and shapes into a mask. He presents a disc to each party member who needs to breath. We all do the same, and we realize while wearing the masks that it's much easier to breath, making our progress slightly more easier.
It takes half an hour to progress to the peak, where we pass above the clouds.

The peak of Alderakh
...

We see that massive caravel covered in snow, and blocking partially the morning light, a Garguatuan deep blue shape is perched on the deck of the ship, making the ship looks small.

Persy
Any idea what it is?
Fen
It's a really big bird.
Persy
You mentioned it, I remember now. So that portal, if you were sailing in an ocean, why is there no water pouring?
Fen
It's not the moment.
Persy
Oh, sorry.

[Nature check - Pass ✔] Persy recalls seeing this shape as a skeleton in a museum, called as a Greater Mountain Roc.

Persy
People, I don't know if we have any ornithologist among us, but it's a Roc.
Azzy
I thought it was made of stone.
Persy
It's the name of a bird, and it's Roc spelled R O C, not the mineral. And from what I recall, the creature is pretty strong and also rare.
Azzy
We have party members who can speak with animals, why not speaking with it?
Persy
That's pretty benevolent compared to what you said before.
Azzy
It can be easily solved with discussion, and from what I see, it would be harder to kill.
Persy
I don't know much about it. Honestly, it's worth a shot I suppose.
Nesvalyn (to Fen)
What have you tried?
Fen
I threw a rock at it, it got mad at me.
Nesvalyn
I wonder why...
Persy
Let's not throw anything. Let's conceal ourselves, and let Reylynn speak with it.
Reylynn
Sure, just send the small edible rabbit girl to talk...
Persy
And we will be ready to act if it's needed, it will be fine.

[Stealth] We are more or less (mostly less) hidden.

Reylynn gets closer and casts [Speak with Animals], then starts the discussion with the Roc.

Reylynn
Hello?

It gets up and looks at Reylynn.

Reylynn
Hey, I don't really like to be a bother, and I need to access this ship, and with you being over and...

she gestures about the ship and then the Roc, which blinks.

[Perception] You feel like it doesn't hear you, even if you sense the magic gets to it.

It opens his wings and shows his massive talons. The feathers are razor-sharp, with monstrous eyes. It stands up and let a piercing shriek that it vibrates through our bodies.
Coming out behind the ship, another featherhead creature, but much smaller (15ft tall), leaps in.

We all go investigate Reylynn's unconscious body.

Nesvalyn
Maybe you should do this Identify thing?
Persy
Thanks Nesvalyn, I forgot about that.
Nesvalyn
If I had to worry about someone turning into a vampire, it would be you, not Reylynn.
Persy
Yeah but the vampire...

[Identify] Nothing is currently affecting her.
Persy notices that her eyes are still black.

Persy
Balnorin, did you ever met something like that?

[Religion - Pass] Balnorin thinks with all the clues, it appears that she's a Reborn now, and shares his thought.

Nesvalyn
She... oh fuck.
Persy
We didn't see any signs of this, when travelling with her from all this time.
Azzy
Do we have to wait her to wake up for questions?
Nesvalyn
Yeah... we have to tie her up first, and secure her before asking any question.

[Detect Magic] We're removing all magic items + tying her up.

While we're doing this, Fen is rushing through the vessel, and happy about it.
Reylynn wakes up eventually.

The new Reylynn
...

Nesvalyn
Hello sunshine.

she tries to break free

Persy
Calm down, we don't want to hurt you.
Reylynn
I'll kill you, again and again.
Persy
Hey, I tried to save you, not kill you.
Azzy
He went the extra mile to save you from the bird.
Reylynn
What bird?
Persy
The one that ate you?
Reylynn
I was eaten?
Persy
Yeah by a bird.

Persy points the corpse of the Roc.

Reylynn
That's a Roc, not a bird.
Persy
Same thing.
Nesvalyn
What are you recalling?
Reylynn
You're my torturers.
Persy
What's your name?
Reylynn
Never thought about that.
Persy
It's not Reylynn?
Reylynn
Who?

After answering, she pauses, as the name feels familiar.

Reylynn?
...maybe my sister's name.
Persy
You're sure that you're not recalling me? The metal weird automaton friend?
Reylynn?
I remember you, you pummeled for decades.
Azzy
What about me?
Reylynn?
You swallowed me and I drown.
Persy
What time is it?
Reylynn?
I don't know.
Persy
Then which era?
Reylynn?
It's been 60 years since I woke up.
Nesvalyn
I... I'm lost... What are you?
Reylynn
I don't know. I guess something that was damned to Hell.

Nesvalyn gets closer to her, then hugs her after a processing time, reflecting to the Hell part.

Nesvalyn
I'm sorry you had to process that.
Persy
But, how can she believe we did that?
Nesvalyn
She has been tortured with people with our faces for centuries, so... she's not going to trust us.
Reylynn?
You're right, I'm not trusting you.

For a while, Nesvalyn suggests to let "Reylynn" go if she doesn't want to stay with us, with a back and forth with Persy about not understanding why and wanting to find a solution with her.

Reylynn?
If you're talking about me, can you point me to the mistress?
Persy
Who?
Reylynn?
Tall, blonde, blue eyes...
Nesvalyn
Raina...
Persy
Not her again.
Nesvalyn
What did she said, do you recall? Does the poison lesson, the flowers you put on her tomb remind you anything or trigger you something?
Reylynn?
I just want her dead.
Nesvalyn
She's already dead.
Reylynn?
No, she's alive. I can sense her.
Nesvalyn
But that's... I'm pretty sure she got killed by that thing.
Persy
Would it be safe we stay on your side if we kill her again?
Reylynn?
At least it would be a start to be in my good graces, as it's the first time we've been able to do pourparlers.

Fen gets back to us in the meantime.

Fen
So uh, I can have it running by tonight, they just sat on it, so most of it is intact. But I have a small little favor to ask.
Azzy
What do you mean?
Nesvalyn
What kind of favor?
Fen
I can't operate the ship on my own, could you guys come with me?
Persy
I would be so optimist if not pissed right now.
Nesvalyn
Uh... yeah, but what about us?
Fen
It would take a few months.
Nesvalyn
I mean we live on this plane...

On a brief moment of self reflection, each of us has a reason to follow Fen to the Astral Sea.
Persy would be driven by his curiosity and optimism of discovering new things (and mostly learn new technology from Fen).
Reylynn (?) feels that the mistress, who seems to match Raina's description, is out there in the Astral Sea.
Azzy could be from Astral Sea and uncover more from their origin.
Nesvalyn recalls the fortune telling from Chappell and the vision from the Otters, and by connecting the dots, would suggest that Paildreo is in the Astral Sea, and perhaps a step forward finding his fiancé? Or at least, learning more about his condition.

It doesn't take long for the party to agree to the proposition, and follow Fen into the Astral Sea, leaving Wundera for a moment if everything goes to plan.
